Learn about effective ways to discipline your child and foster the development of a healthy sense of self in your child.
In order for discipline to be truly effective, it has to help a child learn how to regulate and express emotions as well as control their behavior. Because the goal of discipline is for a child to internalize a sense of appropriate vs. inappropriate behavior and, ultimately, moral action, discipline has to be relationally relevant.
When children are able to recognize their own emotions, they are also more likely to be able to express what they need in order to keep their cool. However, in order for children to be able to feel their feelings authentically, to adapt to social expectations and grow well adjusted, children need guidance from their parents, both to learn and to regulate emotions and feelings.
In this course, a child development specialist, Noelle Cochran, PsyD, discusses ways in which parents can discipline their children and also help them understand and manage feelings and emotions.
